Health Checks

Blood Pressure Monitoring

High blood pressure is often called the ‘silent killer’.

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood against the walls of the arteries. Your blood pressure varies throughout the day depending on your activities. High blood pressure (hypertension) is when your blood pressure is persistently higher than normal. It’s one of the main risk factors for heart disease and if left uncontrolled can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Blood pressure that is high over a long time is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to a heart attack or stroke. The medical name for high blood pressure over a long period of time is hypertension.

Causes of Hypertension
The exact causes of hypertension are often not clear and may be affected by
factors such as:

  • family history
  • diet, including eating too much salt
  • alcohol intake
  • weight
  • your level of physical activity

We can help you keep track of this with our Free blood pressure monitoring service.

If you’re concerned about your blood pressure, come in as often as you like, we can help you monitor and figure out your next steps together (a printout for your doctor may also be provided)

Further advice:

Discuss a treatment plan with your healthcare professional.

Manage your weight through appropriate diet and exercise

Quit smoking; smoking doubles your risk of stroke.

Limit your intake of saturated fats and salt.

Reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake.

Cholesterol Screening

There are two types of cholesterol; HDL ‘good’ cholesterol and LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol.
Eating foods rich in saturated fats will increase the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood, which is a risk factor in coronary heart disease.

High cholesterol levels may not give you any symptoms, so a blood test is the best way to check how much cholesterol and other lipids your blood contains..

Health Check Procedure

Usually performed as a fasting test, a small amount of blood will be taken from your fingertip and applied to the testing strip. We will discuss your results and any lifestyle advice. The test should take about 3 minutes. This test measures your total cholesterol levels. For a full breakdown of your HDL, LDL and triglycerides levels, we recommend visiting your GP.

Tips & Advice

  • Reduce foods high in saturated fat and salt.
  • Commit to regular moderate-intensity exercise.
  • Quit smoking and reduce your alcohol intake.
  • Work to reduce your blood pressure (if elevated).
  • Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids and soluble fibre.
Blood Glucose Screening

With 1.2 million people in Australia living with diabetes, it’s important to monitor your blood glucose levels if you are at risk. We at pharmacy will take a small amount of blood from your fingertip and apply it to the testing strip, wait for the result and take it from there.

Tips & Advice

  • Swap processed carbs for whole grain versions.
  • Commit to a regular exercise plan.
  • Opt for lean proteins like fish and chicken.
  • Try natural sugarless sweeteners (eg organic stevia)
  • Drink your recommended daily intake of water.
Anaemia Screening

Low iron levels can lead to fatigue, breathlessness, decreased immunity, and anaemia.

Additional symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, hair loss, headaches, and dizziness.

During the screening process will take a small blood sample from your fingertip and apply it to the test strip. We can discuss your results with you and give you some further lifestyle advice.

Tips & Advice

  • Increase your intake of iron-rich foods.
  • Vitamin-C loaded foods may enhance iron absorption.
  • Reduce alcohol and tea, which can impair iron absorption.
  • Speak to your Pharmacist about a monitoring plan.
  • Look at adding supplements to your diet.
Bowel Cancer Screening Test Kits

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program aims to reduce deaths from bowel cancer by detecting the early signs of the disease.

We stock Bowel Cancer Test Kits in store. The test is simple and easy to perform and results are highly accurate. Can be completed in the privacy of your own home and there are no diet or medical restrictions required to perform the test.  Ask our staff for more details.
